The Gigabyte Game
By Andrew (age 11)

Prologue

In the early seventies, the first computer was made. This computer was so simple that adding two plus two was difficult for it. When better computers were made, this one was sent down to the locked storage basement.

Sometimes magic happens – especially when there isn’t a lot of technology to get in its way. Sitting alone in a storage locker, deep in the basement of the IBM building, there was plenty of time for this computer to add two plus two. To that, another two. And another two. And another. And another. And another….

Chapter One:  The Doorway to…what?

I stood in front of the wide doorway. There was only one thing in my mind. Whoa. Don’t think I’m dumb. Your mind would do that too if you tried to go in to your house from your backyard to get some lemonade for you and your friend, and suddenly a huge door appeared in front of you! I called my friend Mac over.

"Does this happen often?" he asked.

"Not really," I replied.

I walked in the door. It was a plain, small room with only one thing in it, a computer. To my surprise, it was on. Mac saw the keyboard, ran to it, and started hitting all the keys.

"What are you doing?!" I practically screamed.

"Having a little fun," he said happily, "If I hadn’t run to it first you would have done the same thing. Admit it. Now what does this thing do?"

It was weird. That was the only thing I could admit. It was a little green button saying "in" on it. Mac quickly pressed the button. There was a flash and then it stopped, spewing a beautiful jungle all around us. Suddenly a little man scurried by.

"Excuse me; can you direct us out of here?" I asked.

"Oh, just find the options menu!" Squeaked the little man, "it’s across the yellow sea on a hill. My name is Gigabyte. Look out for the King’s Guards!" With that, he scurried off.

A moment later, we were on our way. Suddenly, I heard something behind me. I turned around while walking forward but it was only a rabbit. I started to look forward, when smack – I ran into something big and hard. Frustrated, I punched it. That was when I looked up to the hulking man wearing a shirt saying, "KG.’ I gulped and hoped that didn’t mean "King’s Guard."

Chapter Two:
Run Like the Wind!

"AAAAAAahhhhh!!!!!" Mac and I screamed.

"Holy mackerel!" The guy screamed.

We ran as fast as we could until we reached a large clearing with twenty little cars overlooking a yellow sea. Each vehicle had a sword and they were sparkling! Mac quickly hopped in one and began pressing all the buttons (he always does that!). I jumped in one too and began pressing every button (what could I do?). Slowly we levitated up, when I realized these things had wheels! I saw a girl of eight or seven flying up while lifting us up.

"Are-you-friendly?" I asked.

"Good, you speak my language! My name is Flyer. I can fly because I’m a superhero!" she replied.

We went with Flyer to a campsite, where we met the other superheroes. One was only yellow and I thought he was strange. Another was a monster, and really big. Another was a cat and a girl, all mixed together. One was all blue, who Flyer told me could spurt water. The last one was invisible so I couldn’t see her. We all gathered around a tree with a face. It spoke in our heads in a very boring tone.

"You must get on the battle boat and cross the sea, as you know. Then get past the King’s castle, then to the hill."

Soon after that we were on our way and I knew this: one superhero could shoot lightning and run fast, and it was the yellow one. Or maybe it was the red one. Maybe I didn’t know anything.

Chapter Three:  Superheroes a' Plenty!

I felt different being with superheroes. Mac said he felt it too, so I pondered. I was halfway through thinking when I realized I was still holding the sword on the little car.

"I’m going to use this," I whispered. "I know it."

Later, I was trying to tell the superheroes apart.

"Ok. The red one is Flame Orf. The blue one is Aqua Girl, the green one is Flyer, the invisible one is Visa Girl, the cat is Kitten Girl, and the yellow one is Ditcher. Did I get that right?" I asked.

"Yes!" they cried, "Finally!"

Afterwards, I asked Mac if he still held his sword.

"Yup, and you know what, I think we might have some fun!"

Suddenly someone called out, "King’s Guard!! Battle stations!! Battle stations!!"

"Oh well, I knew I was gonna use this sword," I said.

Chapter Four:  Simon the Killer Ewok

Shing!!! Ssst!!! I could finally see the superheroes’ powers in action. Flyer was making a hurricane and catching guards on the run, Ditcher was shooting lightning bolts, Flame-Orf was making mucus on guards, and everyone else was doing their job.

"I’m not running this time!" I yelled. I swung my sword, knocking back eight guards across the ground. "OOF! This thing is powerful!"

The guards kept coming, and we knew we wouldn’t win.

"Anybody know any cheat codes?!" Flame-Orf shouted.

"I do!" I said, "Force Ore!"

Everyone looked at me.

"What?" Flyer asked.

"Just wait!" I said, and suddenly, millions of purple diamonds shot up out of the ground around us, keeping the guards back.

"Simon Says!" I screamed.

"Kind of a weird thing to say," Ditcher said to me.

The little guy from Star Wars, named Simon, appeared. That little ewok sent blast after blast of energy with his staff, keeping the guards at bay.

"Everyone make a break for the shore!" Flame-Orf shouted. Moments later, we were on our way on the battle boat.

Chapter Five:  Pirates!!!

Up ahead, we saw a gigantic hill! At the top, there was a little sign that I couldn’t read because I was too far away. I looked our boat over. It was leaky, it smelled bad, it was dirty, I saw pirates, and….WAIT A COTTON PICKIN’ MINUTE…..

"PIRATES!" I yelled.

Our cannons blasted the other boat, and we won! I would love to say that, but no! We had ONE cannon, and in ten seconds, our ship blew up. I closed my eyes as the yellow water surrounded me.

I awoke on a beach, next to a huge hill with a little sign on it. Everyone else was on the beach, too.

"I couldn’t shoot my mucus in time!" Flame-Orf groaned.

I said, "That’s nothing….I don’t know how to get home."

Chapter Six:  The Magic Number

"I know how you can get home," Flame-Orf said,
"and I know how you got here.

Your dad brought you to a computer, right?"

"Yes," I said, "that’s right."

"And how long was that computer in the basement?" he asked.

"How did you know that?!" I shouted.

"You are in it," he said, "this computer had so much time to add two plus two,

It added more, and more, and more, until it got to a special number. Gnomes in the mountains live nine-hundred years. Each day of their whole life, they would rub a sword one-hundred times, until they rubbed the sword a number that creates magic. Your computer did the same."

Later we were on the hill, next to the sign. I touched it and I was back home!
